If you’re new to Overwatch in general, or just looking to learn the Tank role, then hero selection is crucial. Playing Tank is all about controlling space for your team and holding space from the enemy, applying pressure to the frontline, blocking and absorbing damage for your allies, and making yourself a threat in team fights.
Each character on the Overwatch Tank Roster achieves this in different ways, and naturally learning the basics of the characters and the role itself comes easier with certain picks. If you’re looking for some Tank heroes that have a relatively beginner-friendly skill floor, are generally easy to pick up in terms of gameplay loop, and fit into a decent variety of team comps with ease, then we’ve got you covered. Here’s the 5 best Tank heroes for beginners in Overwatch.

Reinhardt

Reinhardt is a brilliant choice of Tank for learning the core mechanics of this role in Overwatch. He has a straightforward kit that is easy for beginners to understand, and it forces them to learn core fundamentals such as how to take and hold space, when to protect your team, and how to lead the frontline.
You get both the satisfaction of protecting your allies with his shield and the aggression of swinging your hammer at enemies. His charge and fire strike also provide tools to hold chokepoints or close distance without complicating his kit, which makes him genuinely fun to play and a good, reliable tank to have in your hero pool.
Mauga

If you want a rather straightforward gameplay loop that makes it easy to jump into the action, then Mauga is a great choice. His kit is simple – use his chainguns to apply burn and inflict damage, and use your charge to aggressively enter a fight or get out just in time. Everything else about him can be learned by playing a few matches.
He also has a very strong frontline presence against the enemy Tank, which can help with learning matchups on the role. Mauga can go head-to-head with almost any pick on the roster, if not counter them. You don’t need to master any intimidating mechanics before you can start having fun on the role; just learn when to commit to a fight, and Mauga will give you plenty of opportunities to shine.
Orisa

Orisa is a very forgiving hero with a steady kit, giving newcomers plenty of tools to learn the fundamentals of playing Tank. She thrives in brawl but is flexible enough to fit into a variety of team compositions, and that reliability helps when learning a new role or game.
More importantly, her kit covers several important responsibilities for the Tank role. This includes learning when to stand your ground with Fortify vs. when to use natural cover, how to read and interrupt key abilities in a fight with your stun, and reading when you need to momentarily give up space and peel in order to survive the fight. These mechanics carry over to many other heroes in the role, making Orisa a brilliant first choice.
D.Va

D.Va has remained one of the most popular and fun-to-play Overwatch Tanks for good reason. She has a relatively low skill floor, which makes her easy for newcomers to enjoy. Yet, she also has a high skill ceiling that makes her viable at a wide range of Ranks, plus the satisfaction of seeing huge improvement as you refine your skills with her kit.
She’s also arguably the easiest high-mobility or dive Tank for beginners to pick up. Boosters enable you to learn when and who to chase for finals; Defense Matrix forces you to read fights in real-time and develops quick reactions for absorbing key enemy abilities. Even getting de-meched can provide beginners with a second chance at survival after a poorly timed engagement, helping them learn the consequences of pushing too far from your team’s line of sight. Also, there’s not much more satisfying than pressing Self-Destruct and watching the enemy cease to exist, so that’s gotta be a plus too, right?
Sigma

Sigma provides the chance to learn slightly more advanced mechanics without feeling like you’ve been thrown into the deep end. His barrier can be deployed and recalled on demand, which teaches you cooldown discipline. Kinetic Grasp absorbs incoming enemy bullets and projectiles and converts them into shields for his survivability. And then his bouncing primary fire adds a new layer of muscle memory that enables you to damage enemies even from behind cover.
Sigma teaches a more slow-paced, methodical style of tanking. He’s all about using the map, holding space, and applying pressure through poke damage, and reading the entire battlefield rather than rushing the frontline. You can even get creative with his Gravitic Flux ultimate and use it to force enemies off the objective (which pays off in Overtime) or to set up massive combos with your teammates – lock-on abilities such as High Noon, Tactical Visor, and B.O.B. are a free-for-all!
